Last time I talked about wind power, so I would like to take this opportunity to introduce some facts about wind power, or natural energy, that have been misreported or misunderstood in Japan.

- The more wind turbines (and solar power) there are and the more they are dispersed across regions, the more load fluctuations will be leveled out.
Another feature is that it has a very high offsetting effect with solar power generation. Generally speaking, there is little wind on days when the sun is shining, and vice versa. The same can be said for day and night, and summer and winter. In Japan, it is said that the best balance in terms of cost-effectiveness is about 70:3 wind power:solar power, but at present, solar power is by far the only one that has become so widespread.

・Collaboration with wind forecasts is progressing.
In Spain, all wind power plants over 10MW in size are connected by communication lines through regional control centers located in 28 locations throughout the country, and the output of each wind power plant can be monitored in real time. Wind power output is predicted based on information such as the weather, wind speed, and temperature at each wind power plant. Based on this, the adjustment capacity of other power sources five hours in advance is calculated.
Before the nuclear accident, nuclear power was called the "baseload power source" in Japan, and was the first source of electricity generation used. Next came thermal power, which is the cheapest, coal, then cheapest gas, and finally, when it is used the most, oil. This was an absolute order. Because they tried to add only a few percent of natural energy to this, it was labeled as "unstable," and from there it automatically became clear that "storage batteries are necessary." However, in European countries, natural energy is now treated as a baseload power source.
Think about it carefully. It is true that the initial cost of natural energy is still a little higher than that of thermal power (although onshore wind power is approaching that of oil). However, once it is built, it doesn't emit CO2 and is free, so there is no logic to not using it. That's why it is used as the first priority. And the system adjusts supply and demand by leveling out the increased volume and area, and by utilizing state-of-the-art networks and weather forecasting technology to easily adjust thermal power generation.
If we do it this way, storage batteries are economically unfeasible when the renewable energy penetration rate is below 20%. I have to say that in Japan, there is a strong tendency to prioritize the sales and advertising of storage battery manufacturers over whether it is truly rational or not. European countries believe that storage batteries will become necessary once the penetration rate exceeds 50%. Denmark looks set to reach this target in about 10 years. In Switzerland, the purchase price from renewable energy sources has become lower than the market price of electricity, so it is more profitable to consume electricity at home.
As a result, electric vehicles are automatically sold, which leads to a virtuous cycle that continues, and also complements the "unstable" nature of natural energy, providing emergency energy for each household in the event of a disaster.
In this way, we can say that policies and corporate activities are driven by an extremely rational and beautiful virtuous cycle. I recently listened to various presentations in Denmark, and wherever I went, it seemed to start with, "We must reduce CO2 emissions to zero by XNUMX. To achieve this..." This is a similar trend in neighboring countries, but in Japan, you rarely hear this kind of talk (especially from government officials...).
One more thing... one that always gets criticized in Germany is the argument that "Europe is connected by land, and we buy electricity from French nuclear power plants, so the situation is different from Japan." In short, while France imports more electricity from Germany on a commercial basis, the actual flow of electricity is greater than the amount flowing from France to Germany. The reason for this is simply because the amount flowing to Italy and Spain via Germany is counted. I don't think any major media outlets have explained this part yet.
