This month's Architectural Knowledge article is titled "Energy-Saving Housing Design Methods Based on European Standards"

The purpose of the spacer is to insulate the space. The material that provides the worst insulation is aluminum.
It's strange that they're using such materials. It's like using diamonds in the rubber of car tires.
In short, they are doing something impossible.
I think there will be many high-performance sashes coming out in the future, but for anything other than the highest performance products, "wouldn't an aluminum spacer be good enough?"
